Carbon Forms I-IX- Forms of The Living Coast
Carbon Forms developed through my interest in marine algae and the movement of carbon through coastal ecosystems. Seaweeds absorb carbon dioxide as they grow, converting it into organic matter through photosynthesis. I began to imagine this largely invisible process as something that could be given mass: nine dark forms in which carbon becomes almost bodily. Their repeated, rounded shapes suggest cells, spores, geological deposits or unknown organisms, resisting any single identification. Against this simplicity of form, the rough, slightly spiked surfaces introduce something more unsettled: they appear at once protective, resistant and alive. Light catches on these irregular surfaces rather than simply passing across them, continually changing how the forms are perceived. Together, the nine sculptures give weight and physical presence to an ecological process that is fundamental to the living coast, yet ordinarily remains beyond our sight.
