WINTERING – £1,600 IN PRIZES

WINTERING 2026 is delighted to announce a total prize fund of £1,600, made possible through generous private support and an exciting new sponsorship from Valero Pembroke Refinery.

The exhibition celebrates contemporary artistic practice across West Wales, bringing together established and emerging artists working in a wide range of disciplines.

A particularly exciting development is the introduction of the Valero Young West Wales Artist Award 2026, a £500 prize recognising and encouraging young artistic talent across the region.

Valero Young West Wales Artist Award 2026  – £500

Open to artists aged 13–25 living or working in West Wales.

This new award has been made possible through the exceptional generosity of Valero Pembroke Refinery, whose longstanding commitment to supporting charities, young people and local communities has made a significant difference throughout Pembrokeshire.

The award aims to recognise originality, imagination, artistic ambition and creative potential, offering young artists an opportunity to have their work exhibited and celebrated alongside established practitioners.

I am enormously grateful to Stephen Thornton, PGPA Manager, and Hywel Gibbs, Communications Specialist at Valero, for their generosity, encouragement and thoughtful support in making this award possible.

It is my hope that this award will inspire young artists from across West Wales to take the next step in their creative development and recognise the value of their artistic voices.

Exhibition Theme

Wintering is not simply about winter as a season. It can be a time of withdrawal and endurance, shelter and stillness, migration and survival.

In the natural world, apparent dormancy often conceals extraordinary activity: seeds wait beneath the soil, animals adapt, coastlines continue to change and life prepares quietly for renewal.

Artists are invited to interpret the theme freely.

Open to artists living or working in West Wales.

Both established and emerging artists are warmly encouraged to submit.

Artists aged 13–25 will also be eligible for consideration for the Valero Young West Wales Artist Award 2026.
